The UK has, for a long, long time, failed to resolve issues around unauthorised encampment by Gypsy and Traveller people.  Every year the same stories of local shock and anger at the unexpected arrival of groups of caravans circulate, people on all sides are upset and stressed, and only talk of increasing public powers to shift camps on quicker is offered to help local communities manage the situation.

Gypsy and Traveller families are shifted from pillar to post whilst coping with poor health, not being able to access education for the children, and enduring significant hate crime and stereotyping.

We know that something has to change.

Happily if you are on the roadside in Leeds there is a good chance you will be offered basic waste disposal services and a stay in one place of up to 28 days.  This is due to a policy we encouraged the local authority to adopt – known as negotiated stopping.  It works! We know that we have reduced community tensions, increased health and wellbeing, reduced environmental damage and saved the Police and the Council a lot of money (close to ¼£m per year).

Now you can do it too! Whether you are a Gypsy or Traveller, a local settled resident, a council officer, a police officer or even a local politician, you can make the change happen in your area.

We want to help.

On this link you will find a new website dedicated to Negotiated Stopping with films, frequently asked questions, guidance on how to make the model work, and template documents that can be used in your area.

Please take a look and share, share, share this good news!
