Flooding: looking backwards and forwards

Flooding in LeedsWe at Leeds GATE have been taking stock of the recent flooding just before Christmas and the impact it has had on the community. Few can have turned on the TV in the past few weeks and not feel something, whether anxiety for people they know, frustration at the official response in some areas, or encouraged by some community spirited responses.

Fire Safety on Cottingley Springs

Fire safety at Cottingly SpringsOur members were all moved by the tragic events in Carrickmines in County Dublin, our thoughts and prayers are with the families there.

Working with Leeds GATE, residents at Cottingley Springs decided they wanted to ensure their community was safe. Residents asked Leeds GATE if they could arrange a visit by West Yorkshire Fire Service to check smoke alarms in trailers and offer fire safety advice.

“I don’t think I am registered at any practice. Can I register here now?”

Boxer Jimmy is sharing his skills on site

Boxing Skills ClassesFormer Professional Boxer Jimmy Lowther is running boxing classes for young people on Cottingley Springs caravan site. Every Friday after school Jimmy uses equipment that GATE have supplied from our Summer Play Enable Grant Scheme, to run the session for 5 – 10 year olds. ‘Its more about fitness’ say Jimmy, ‘but they will learn the discipline too’.

Leeds Gypsy and Traveller Exchange wins Heritage Lottery Fund support

Leeds Gypsy and Traveller Exchange (GATE) are delighted to announce that we have received £100,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project, Feet on the Ground, in Leeds. The project will work with Gypsy and Traveller community members to explore and promote Gypsy and Traveller heritage, working with an archive of artefacts and books gifted to Leeds GATE.
