Although Gypsies and Travellers don't usually qualify as 'migrants', we were delighted to be invited to attend this programme run by Migration Partnership. Two members of Leeds GATE have just completed the programme which was celebrated at an event attended by the Lord Mayor in the Civic Hall, Leeds. The programme ran for four months and was intended to help people from migrant communities learn about life in Leeds.  Previous course participants have found that the course gave them more confidence, helping them to settle into the City, learn about how local services work and gain employment.

Telling our story

What's your story? We sadly know all too well that most media about Gypsy and Travellers is overwhelmingly negative and inaccurate. Whether a tabloid article decrying the presence of a roadside camp to the Channel 4 ‘Gypsy Wedding’ series, it appears hard to avoid encountering such items of questionable truth and hostile intent.

Morley Travellers Site Application - honest discussion please!

Morley Travellers Site ApplicationThe recent response from some politicians and local residents to the recent Gypsy and Traveller site application in Morley is disappointing on many levels.  An inability to treat people fairly, a failure to analyse the facts properly and a lack of perspective count amongst the most disappointing features.  The other concern, worth considering in more detail, regards the tone and language of this recent debate.  This tells us something deeper and more troubling about making progress on identifying prospective new Gypsy and Traveller sites.

A reminder to get your scrap license sorted!

Scrap metal wagonJust a quick reminder about the new scrap metal licence rules. As you may have heard, anyone who is dealing in scrap metal, or plans to do so, now needs a licence. This law came into force a couple of months back in September and is now being enforced since last week. From what we hear, the police together with the Council have in some areas been asking to see licences from scrap dealers travelling near scrap yards so this is clearly a requirement which should not be ignored lightly.
