exciting times in the Leeds GATE Archive...

As GATE gets back into full flow in 2016, it is always good to highlight some of the more positive things we have to look forward to. In recent weeks much of the focus, quite rightly, has been on the floods over Christmas and the ongoing challenges faced in the clear-up or preventing repeated disasters. However there is exciting new work going on at GATE; one which I want to mention in particular is our new heritage worker Vanessa Cardui and the heritage project she is leading on.

cold weather kit available from GATEWith cold weather on its way (and hopefully an end to the seemingly endless rain), Leeds GATE's members are preparing to help.  So far 10 families have volunteered to be 'cold weather buddies' and offered to keep a first aid cold weather pack at their home or in cars.  Supported by Leeds City Council's Winter Warmth Fund, Leeds GATE have bought kit such as tracks for tyres and snow shoes. Families volunteering have agreed to help out neighbours, especially the elderly, should bad weather hit.

Leeds GATE are excited to announce a new position for a Health Advocate. The Health Advocate will work with our Advocacy Worker to provide a reliable and confidential health advocacy service which provides information, signposting and support to Gypsy and Traveller individuals and their families in the Leeds area.

Fury over Fury: Thoughts on ‘the Gypsy King’

Tyson FuryIt is fair to say that the past couple of weeks have been a mixed bag for boxer Tyson Fury. He recently beat Wladimir Klitschko in a heavyweight matchup, becoming World Champion in the process; I’m not a boxing fan but even I am aware that this was a big deal. Sadly, shortly after this he got caught up in a public outcry following some comments which many have criticised for being homophobic and sexist. So why does this all matter and what are we to think about it?

“So what you are saying Dad is that this is the best Santa is town?”

“It’s the only Santa in town. I mean the world.”

“I just hope he listens to my very clear request of a drum kit.”
