Hello…. My name is Jo, I am a student Social Worker from the University of Leeds. I have been here for 2 weeks and the time has passed really quickly (time flies when you’re having fun!). I have had the pleasure of meeting a number of members from the community and everyone has been very welcoming and helped me to start to settle in to this placement with ease.

All staff at Leeds GATE are friendly, helpful, very skilled and knowledgeable in the job that they do; nothing is too much for them and they are always willing to answer all of my many questions. I will undoubtedly learn a great deal from this placement and intend to make the most of learning from all of the staff team.

I have been surprised at the struggles that Gypsy and Travellers face in regards to social inclusion with things such as green wheelie bins are not allowed on Cottingley Site. Why should where you live exclude you from simple things such as recycling? These are little things that I take for granted.

More shockingly is the struggle they have with accessing primary health services, this is something that should not exist in 2016, however without the support of GATE many Gypsies and Travellers would struggle to register with a GP or dentist.

Despite being such a new face, I have been welcomed into community member’s homes, offering lots of tea and coffee and with the support of them and staff at GATE I am learning new things every single day. I look forward to continuing my placement and meeting more new people. I really hope that I can help the Gypsy and Traveller community in some way.

Finally I would like to say thank you to everyone that has helped me so far…. I have had fun, laughed and learnt new things every day.
