GATE are looking for a Volunteer Literacy Tutor

By Claire Graham |  February 4, 2019 |

We just love our Thursday Group that runs every week at Leeds GATE, as numbers are growing demand for the literacy lessons is also growing so we have created a volunteer role to complement the current tutor.

Leeds GATE value our volunteers, a full DBS check will be carried out and travel and lunch expences covered.

The role is to support the learning needs of Gypsy and Traveller members of Leeds GATE, some of whom have not had the chance to attend regular school as a child. The Volunteer Tutor will be experienced and confident in delivering literacy and numeracy group work and 121 work. The role will work closely with our regular tutor and other volunteers who help run ‘The Thursday Group’. Literacy lessons to be delivered to small groups and 121s informally alongside other activities of the Thursday Group. We hope that this role will off a good learning experiance to anyone who is looking to train as a teacher or someone who is already qualified and wants to share their skills.  The group runs from 12.30 - 2.30 most Thursday afternoons.

Here are some points from the Voliunteer Role.

* To deliver literacy and numeracy support to a group of Gypsy and Traveller adults who are members of GATE.

* To work with experienced tutor and Community Organiser in the planning and delivery of group and 121 work.

* Listen to the needs of members and shape lessons to suit learning styles.

* To understand and adhere to Leeds GATE’s Values
