Chief Executive Officer
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Leeds GATE leads the staff team to deliver the organisation aims and objectives on behalf of the Executive Board. Helen has worked for Leeds Gypsy and Traveller Exchange since the beginning, as development worker; project manager, and lately as CEO.
Before Leeds GATE, Helen's employment was mostly spent in fields and factories, and she still regards herself as 'an apple picker'. In 2002, a happy series of events allowed Helen to bring her experiences of living and working alongside Gypsy people, and the opportunity to work at Leeds GATE, together. Helen has been lucky to bring her education, enthusiasm and passion for justice, to enable and support the Gypsy and Traveller people, and their colleagues and partners, who have made Leeds GATE what it is today. If asked, Helen describes herself as a human rights worker.

Ben has been providing Leeds GATE’s advocacy service since 2012. He supports community members in understanding and accessing services through various tasks, such as form filling, making phone calls, supporting members at meetings or carrying out research. This work largely involves addressing issues relating to housing, employment, finances and welfare rights. He delivers this work through a mix of office based appointments, phone support, site visits, house calls and meetings with professionals.
Ben also is involved in supporting the GATE team in researching and campaigning, often with other Gypsy and Traveller organisations, seeking to challenge, inform and improve laws, rules or practices. In particular, Ben has an interest in accommodation and planning as well as proposed changes to the benefit system. He works to include members in this campaigning work where possible and more broadly aims to build up members’ capacity to self-advocate
