Leeds GATE's response to proposed injunctions

Readers of the Yorkshire Evening Post will have seen news last week that Councillor Jim McKenna has persuaded the council to use its legal department to pursue a blanket permanent injunction against unauthorised Gypsy and Traveller camps across three large districts of Leeds.

Such a policy might be fair enough if there were enough ‘authorised’ places for these families to go, but there aren’t and provision of such (either as permanent sites or temporary authorised and managed negotiated stopping) seems a long way off. A successful application for this injunction would put Leeds families in a perilous position.

Leeds GATE Executive Board has written to all the councillors asking that they put a stop to this application before it goes any further and to put their efforts into finding permanent, authorised solutions to Gypsy and Traveller homelessness in Leeds.
