Last Friday a group of residents from Mary Street Caravan Site in Bradford visited MP for Bradford East Imran Hussain.

‘We had just had enough,’ said resident Ruth, ‘it didn’t matter what we did or said we were just being ignored, it felt like we didn’t have a voice’. A few months ago in total frustration residents rang Leeds GATE to see if we could help in any way.

GATE visited the site and together with residents made a short film which highlighted some of the issues faced by people living on the 28 pitch council site which is located in BD4.

We booked an appointment with Imran and posted the film on You Tube, amazingly after 3 weeks the film had had over 1000 views, residents posted it on social media and also gained a lot of support for the issues they raised from Travellers and settled people alike.

‘Imran was great’, said Margaret, ‘he watched the film and really got it, it felt like he understood us’. Hussain has been MP for Bradford East since last year, he also shared with residents how he grew up knowing lots of members of Bradford’s Gypsy and Traveller communities as he boxed as a young man.

The film highlights high rents, and lack of facilities, specifically residents asked Imran for help in getting fences around plots so children will be safer playing and also hope for further investigations into possible pollution caused by the tip located right next to the site.
