New pitches planned for LeedsLeeds communities are delighted to start the new year with news that Yorkshire Housing are to build the first socially rented Gypsy and Traveller pitches to be built in Leeds for over 20 years. Funds have been awarded by the Homes and Communities Agency to build 12 new Gypsy and Traveller pitches in Leeds as part of a national programme to reduce unauthorised encampment.

The plans are to build two smaller sites in Leeds, rather than one 12 pitch site. The council now has to identify suitable land to build the pitches on and get planning permissions, so it will still be many months before any of the homeless families in Leeds are able to move onto a new pitch, but this is really significant progress towards improving the situation for Gypsies and Travellers here in Leeds.
