NHS Help Cards

By Joanne Birtwhistle |  August 23, 2016 |

It is widely recognised that numeracy and literacy skills can act as a barrier when accessing services and the fear of form filling and electronic sign in sheets if enough to keep people away. West CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group) are supporting GATE in bridging the gap between Gypsies and Travellers and Health Services.

Inspired by our friends at Brighton FFT we decided to create our own NHS Help Cards; these cards are specifically designed to help people in seeking assistance in hospitals, walk in clinics, dentists, GP surgeries and other health related centres. This card can be handed over at reception to avoid having to explain that you cannot read or write and requests that the reader be patient in offering you help.

Before we created these cards we wanted to find out what our members thought… So 3 weeks ago we created a consultation poster to allow community members to vote for their favourite design, if they would find the card helpful and if they would like GATE’s logo to be included.

The card we have created was the preferred choice by a majority of the voters and most members stated that they would like GATE’s logo and phone number to be included. More importantly community members said that they WOULD use the cards and thought that they WOULD be a great help to them.

We have started to distribute these cards to community members and will be following up to assess the impact of them in the coming months.

If you would like to request any of these cards or would like further information, please call into the office or phone GATE on 0113 240 2444.
