Leeds GATE CEO thinks we need to talk about 'antigypsyism'

Promotion and use of the term ‘antigypsyism’ is potentially as contentious as it is helpful. For example in some places in Europe the word gypsy is a stigmatised word.  In the UK and Spain the word, which we capitalise as a name, Gypsy, is not regarded of itself as a stigma. Whatever we think about it, the Alliance against Antigypsyism, who are promoting the term, are likely to have influence in Europe at least, if possibly less so in the UK. Whether we remain in the European Union or not however, this line of thinking is likely to affect UK Romany Gypsies, Irish Travellers, Scottish Gypsy Travellers and Roma. We need to talk about it.
