Who we are

Leeds Gypsy & Traveller Exchange, known more commonly as Leeds GATE, is a vibrant and brave grassroots organisation led by Gypsy and Traveller people in partnership with others in and across West Yorkshire.

Our thriving community building is based in Cross Green, Leeds but we work and have members across the region, in Bradford, Kirklees and Wakefield.

A member-led organisation working to improve quality of life for Gypsy and Traveller people.

We’ve created a brand new resource pack bringing together so many brilliant resources of our own, and other colleagues and partners - many of them Gypsies and Travellers.

Did You Know?

At least 7000 Gypsy and Traveller people live in West Yorkshire. Many of us live in houses, or in our caravans on private or public sites. Some of us live on short term camps.

Did you know?

Gypsies and Travellers are recognised Ethnic Minority groups under the Race Relations Act as amended in 2000, and we have ‘protected characteristics’ according to the 2010 Equality Act.

Did You Know?

The average life expectancy for Gypsies and Irish Travellers in Leeds is about 50 years of age, compared of the settled population of Leeds which is around 78 years (Leeds Racial Equality Council, 2005). This means that if other groups think of older people as being 70 or over, we have to think of Gypsy or Traveller people who are over 50 as being ‘older’.

Did you Know?

Some of the best known Gypsy or Traveller activists now and in the past are from West Yorkshire? Tommy Doherty, Ada North, Jim Connors, Eileen Lowther, and Kim Moloney MBE are all from West Yorkshire!
