Training
Leeds GATE staff and members are experts in inclusion – and we believe learning about a community’s history and culture is the first step to better understanding. Using years of combined experience and community insight, our bespoke training packages offer an engaging and educational session built on our vision and values.

What we do
Out of respect for Gypsies and Travellers we chose to call our training ‘The Lives of Gypsies and Travellers’ rather than ‘awareness training’ or ‘cultural competency training’, as they have an ‘othering’ effect.
- Provide training to different sectors and audiences across West Yorkshire and sometimes beyond
- Bespoke and tailored sessions to your specific service and geographical area

FAQ’s – find out more about what our training includes, cost and more. If your question isn’t answered here, please fill out our enquiry form below.
Does your training include information on Roma people?
We are a Gypsy and Traveller organisation and don’t work directly with Roma communities, therefore we don’t include them in our training except to define who the group are. This is because Roma people are a completely separate ethnic group with their own set of very important and distinct history. You may have seen the acronym GRT used a lot, which groups Gypsy Roma and Traveller together. As an organisation we don’t subscribe to its use without context. If you do require specific support and guidance on working with Roma people and families, there are other local organisations you can contact for support.
We are outside of West Yorkshire, will you still run a training session with us?
If you are based outside of West Yorkshire, our work and session content is still very relevant. We consider each training enquiry individually. Please fill in our contact form below and include information on where you are based and if you require an in-person or online session and we will get back to you.
Will you speak/present at our event?
Many of our staff have spoken at conferences, panels and events either to speak generally about our work or about a specific topic. Please use the contact form to provide us with information on your event such as location, travel etc.
Is your training free? What does it cost?
As our trainings are mainly bespoke, we will provide you with an individual quote based on factors such as length of session, location, number of people. The quote we ask for is to cover our staff time for travel and the session. We are not funded to carry out this work, so paying for these sessions is an investment and valuing our work towards system change.
Will you attend our community group/school/other organisation?
We value and look at each request on a case by case basis due to capacity. On rare occasions we have grant funding that’s project specific and we can use this money to help us to substitute our costs. Contact us using our form and provide as much detail as you can and we will get back to you.
Will we attend to run a training session in person?
If you are within West Yorkshire area we are always open to running sessions in person as we feel these can have fantastic impact. Outside of the region we would approach requests on a case by case basis due to capacity and resources in our team. Please use the contact form to get in touch and let us know your location and requirements.
Can we make recordings and redistribute your training?
For each training session we do, a prior agreement would be made on use of any of our materials, making any recordings and how and where it will be used/accessed by ourselves and your team/organisation. Please state your need for this in your enquiry.

I found the whole presentation to be very eye-opening. It gave me insight into how much harder it can be for somebody within these communities to access mental health care, and the stigmas that may stop many from seeking that care in the first place. I believe organisations like Leeds GATE are essential for Gypsy and Traveller communities.
