Catch up with latest good news about Gypsy camps - Leeds GATE and Rural Media launch new Negotiated Stopping Toolkit

The UK has, for a long, long time, failed to resolve issues around unauthorised encampment by Gypsy and Traveller people.  Every year the same stories of local shock and anger at the unexpected arrival of groups of caravans circulate, people on all sides are upset and stressed, and only talk of increasing public powers to shift camps on quicker is offered to help local communities manage the situation.

Gypsy and Traveller families are shifted from pillar to post whilst coping with poor health, not being able to access education for the children, and enduring significant hate crime and stereotyping.

We know that something has to change.

Despite firm misgivings about the purpose, design and possible consequences of the Government's current 'Consultation on unauthorised development and encampment', we have made a submission.  The deadline for the consultation is Friday 15th at close of play if you would like to make your own comments.

We are incredibly proud to share our delight at being one of the 2018 GSK/Kings Fund Impact Award winners.  To achieve this we have undergone incredibly detailed examination which was tough, but actually really useful and rewarding especially when we realised we had beaten 350 other applicants to be among the final eight winners.  It’s really great to know that the ‘nuts and bolts’ behind the scenes of what we do has withstood such scrutiny and come out on top. So we have a lovely award on the shelf in the office and a lovely unrestricted £30,000 in the bank.  Apart from that what does winning the award mean for us practically?
